Mesothelioma is more than just a commercial
How many times have you heard a mesothelioma commercial on TV? They often start out with, “If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with mesothelioma…”
Most people don’t stop to think about these commercials, or mesothelioma, for that matter. Understandably, most people aren’t forced to think about mesothelioma until receiving a diagnosis.
But maybe these commercials leave more of an impact than we realize.
In a recent interview, professional tennis player Naomi Osaka recently said that she couldn’t get a mesothelioma commercial out of her head during a practice session. “[Mesothelioma was] all I could think about for the whole practice. I was, like, why do I keep thinking about this?”
How much do you know about mesothelioma?
Mesothelioma: The Facts
Mesothelioma is a rare type of cancer caused by exposure to asbestos. Most often, it affects the lining of the lungs. But it can affect other areas of the body as well.
It can take decades for mesothelioma to develop. Individuals who were exposed to asbestos at work 30 or 40 years ago may be shocked when they receive a mesothelioma diagnosis.
In decades past, construction workers, ship builders, railroad workers, auto mechanics, miners, and oil refinery workers had an especially high risk of being exposed to asbestos on the job. Currently, in the United States, construction workers are most likely to be exposed to asbestos on the job.
