Study: Depo-Provera users are 5.6 times more likely to develop meningioma tumors
In 2024, researchers released a study in the British Medical Journal showing that women who used Depo-Provera for more than a year (four injections) were 5.6 times more likely than women who didn’t use the birth control to develop meningioma brain tumors.
Their analysis was based on studying the cases of 18,000 French women who developed meningioma tumors between 2009 and 2018.
Pfizer, the maker of Depo-Provera, has acknowledged the study and said it will update the drug’s label and marketing materials to include meningioma as a potential side effect of using Depo-Provera.
What is Depo-Provera and why might it cause meningioma brain tumors?
Depo-Provera is a birth control that contains synthetic hormones designed to stop women from ovulating.
While more research about the link between Depo-Provera and meningioma is ongoing, researchers believe the drug changes the body’s hormonal balance and causes cell growth in the meninges, membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord.
Depo-Provera contains medroxyprogesterone acetate, which is similar to the hormone progestin. In the French study, researchers found receptors for progesterone in more than 60% of meningiomas, which could provide one potential explanation for the link to meningioma.
Attorneys are investigating what Pfizer knew about Depo-Provera causing meningioma
Now that the study linking meningioma to Depo-Provera was released, lawyers are probing whether Pfizer knew that the drug could cause brain tumors but did not disclose it to patients and doctors. As discovery of the company’s scientific research begins, attorneys and medical experts will take a close look at whether Pfizer knew that Depo-Provera had the potential to cause brain tumors.
Drugs such as Depo-Provera also go through a surveillance program after they are released on the market to determine if there are additional side effects. Attorneys are also probing whether there were signs that women using Depo-Provera were developing meningioma during these post-release monitoring efforts.
