Zyprexa Side Effects

In the fall of 2003, a medical article was published in the medical journal Pharmacotherapy which found that Zyprexa patients were associated with a 37% increased risk of development of diabetes as compared with another antipsychotic, Risperdal. The researchers also found an increased risk for hypoglycemia and pancreatitis. An earlier study published in Schizophrenia Research in 2002 found that approximately 10% of the patients in this small study that took Zyprexa developed hypoglycemia and 1/3 of those patients developed diabetic ketoacidosis. These studies supported the conclusion in 2002 of a third study conducted at the University of Maryland finding a clinically important and significant increased risk of diabetes among those individuals taking Zyprexa.
